Artist Statement Facing Water
As a painter I am prone to a covert brand of portraiture, often subverting essential physical features in order to find a greater emotional resemblance. My painting entitled Facing Water portrays a young woman in reverent relationship with nature, her back turned toward us. The viewer is introduced to her through a shared human experience. We see what she sees. Yet her moment remains private. Essentially, she faces the unknown. Fixed in a timeless landscape, she asserts an enduring physical and emotional presence. She is solidly grounded in that critical moment just before she leaves her past to move toward an expansive future.
